Excellent managers may also be leaders, but they are not interchangeable terms. Leaders are stewards of a vision, a view of the future. An excellent leader has the commitment, energy, communications and “people” skills to develop a team and guide others in the realization of the vision. Leaders are self-aware, understanding their personal strengths and limitations, both professionally and personally, and how these will affect their leadership style. Leaders are not afraid of conflict, and are competent in mediating diverse options.
Leadership skill is frequently cited as the single most important skill in organizational development. While it is important to upgrade management systems and tools, it is equally and frequently more important to develop leadership skills at all levels of an organization—board, staff, volunteer. In these library “stacks” you will find resources we have found particularly compelling in the area of leadership development.
