This North Central Minnesota regional orchestra is dedicated to bringing classical music to new audiences and providing performance opportunities for professional musicians and talented novices.
The American Symphony Orchestra League lauded Dr. Beverly Everett, resident conductor since 2005, as “clearly among the most promising talent in our field.” In 2010, she was selected as a finalist for the American Prize in Orchestral Conducting. The Bemidji Symphony Orchestra received finalist status in the American Prize for Orchestral Performance based on its 2009 presentation of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.
Originally operating under the auspices of Bemidji State University, the orchestra became a separate nonprofit organization in 2000. It now performs seven concerts per year, three of which are specially programmed for families and children. The orchestra offers a subscription season of four Sunday afternoon concerts featuring guest soloists executing traditional repertoire and contemporary music. Highlights of the orchestra’s 70th Anniversary Season (2008-09) included Andre Watts in a performance of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 and a performance of Sacred Vows, a commissioned piece by Libby Larsen.
